Media Statement: Labcorp Stands Ready to Serve COVID-19 Testing Needs with Increased Capacity, Multiple Testing Options and Ways to Access Testing, and No Up-Front Out-of-Pocket Costs*
On March 5, Labcorp launched its COVID-19 molecular test and since then has performed approximately one million COVID-19 nasal swab tests to help diagnose people who may have the virus. We now have the capacity to perform about 1.8 million COVID-19 molecular tests per month, including our COVID-19 at-home self-collection kits through Pixel by LabcorpTM.
Labcorp also launched its COVID-19 at-home self-collection kits through its Pixel by LabcorpTM platform last week – the first at-home collection kit to receive FDA emergency use authorization. These kits, which also use nasal swabs, are currently available for healthcare workers and first responders who have COVID-19 symptoms or meet the testing criteria established by the CDC. We have more than 100,000 at-home self-collection kits available, and expect to increase availability of the at-home kits to over 100,000 kits per week.
Last week, the company also expanded availability of serology tests to detect antibodies to the virus that causes COVID-19. The test is used for people who may have been infected with COVID-19 and are no longer experiencing symptoms. With an order from a doctor or other authorized healthcare provider, including telemedicine providers, antibody blood tests can be administered in any of our nearly 2,000 patient service centers and at tens of thousands of doctor’s offices nationwide. We currently have capacity to perform more than 50,000 serology tests per day and expect to increase that capacity to 200,000 per day by mid-May.
All capacity figures assume available supplies. Our current testing capacity for all COVID-19 tests is greater than the volume we are currently receiving, and we have no backlog.
* For individuals who access testing through Pixel by Labcorp, payment is currently charged at the time of the order, and Labcorp will provide assistance to help individuals obtain reimbursement for the test from their insurance carrier, or through Labcorp if uninsured. By the end of next week, all Labcorp COVID-19 tests will be available without any up-front out-of-pocket payment.
