Labcorp partners with the UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation to support health equity efforts for families in need.

17 January 2023

Debt associated with complex disease states is a common barrier to equitable healthcare—one that disproportionately impacts families based on several factors, including socioeconomic status, demographic characteristics and even family size.1 Since 2007, the UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation (UHCCF) has awarded 30,000 grants valued at $62.2 million to children and their families across the U.S. for medical expenses not covered, or not fully covered, by a family’s commercial health insurance.

Allies in equitable healthcare

As one of the largest charitable organizations in the healthcare industry, UHCCF encourages families faced with challenging medical debt to apply for healthcare grants to address their children’s healthcare costs.

Driven by the belief that equitable healthcare starts with healthy families, UHCCF relies on financial support from like-minded partners, such as Labcorp, who share a culture of philanthropy, a dedication to community service and a commitment to health equity.

For the last decade, Labcorp has supported UHCCF’s mission through a variety of fundraising efforts and sponsorships at a local and national level, making it the single largest partner of the Foundation in the diagnostics industry.

“We are grateful for the consistent and generous support Labcorp has provided to UHCCF, including important financial contributions and countless hours of employee volunteerism,” said Matt Peterson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare’s ancillary and individual business and president of UHCCF. “Labcorp has played an instrumental role in achieving our shared mission to help connect children and families with crucial medical care and services.”

Engaging communities at all levels

Whether it’s a seasonal event, a wine tasting or a golf tournament, Labcorp partners with UHCCF for many of its fundraising efforts.

As an example, for the last two winters, Labcorp has served as the sole sponsor for UHCCF’s Holiday Heroesfundraiser. In 2020, Holiday Heroes raised $146,700, funding approximately 104 medical grants for children across the U.S. The following year, the program broke its own record, raising $147,547 that funded approximately 82 medical grants for children’s medical costs.

In August, at the largest national annual event, Labcorp was a key sponsor, helping the Foundation raise over $2 million for medical grants for children.

Bo Boston, vice president of payor solutions at Labcorp, plays a key role in organizing these events. He believes seeing the impact that these grants have on children and their families reflects the true benefit of the partnership for himself and the company.

“One of the greatest parts of having participated in this decade-long partnership with UHCCF is having the chance to meet the grant recipients and their families at these events,” said Boston. “Seeing their joy, getting to know them on a personal level and knowing that Labcorp played such an important role in enhancing their lives—it gives me great pride in everything we stand for.
